Having a continuous access to the full range of speech sounds is essential for the development of your child’s spoken language. Watch the video to learn more about the Ling Six Sounds Test which is a fun activity to do with your child and will help you to know if your child is hearing the full range of speech sounds. Repeat this test daily, even if they score well. If your child does not hear all the Ling sounds yet, keep doing the test every day and speak to your audiologist or speech therapist to modify your child's rehabilitation plan.

What is the Ling Six Sound Test?

In this video, you will see Penny and Matthew completing the Ling Six Sound Test. This is a quick and easy way to check that your child’s cochlear implants or hearing devices are working, and that they can hear all speech sounds.

Matthew and Penny were both able to imitate all of the Ling sounds: ah, oo, ee, m, sh and ss. This tells us that their cochlear implants are working, and that they are able to hear all the sounds of speech. You should complete the Ling sounds test every morning to ensure your child is ready to listen and learn with their cochlear implants.

The Ling sound test consists of six sounds (plus silence) that can be used daily on a child who is deaf or hard of hearing to ensure they have appropriate access to this specific range of sounds. This video is a quick overview of how to conduct the test.

Researchers at the Pontificia Catholic University of Chile have found that the number of conversational turns a child experiences at 18 months of age predicts socioemotional competencies at 30 months of age. The paper, co-authored by Esteban Gómez Muzzio and Katherine Strasser and titled “Language and socioemotional development in early childhood: The role of conversational turns,” was published in the April 2021 issue of the journal Developmental Science. This marks the first peer-reviewed study to demonstrate a link between conversational turns and socioemotional development using LENA.
